Building model steam engines is one of the most rewarding and satisfying of all hobbies. Nothing can beat the sense of achievement in seeing a piece of machinery you have spent many long hours creating come to life under its own power. This website has been set up to enable enthusiasts to build two sturdy model steam engines TOSCA and JESSIE. To navigate through the site simply click on the webpage links on the left.

The plans for the engines cost £10 each and are available by clicking HERE. These plans each consist of about 25 pages of text photographs and detailed drawings. They describe fully how to make each component from the stock material to the finished part. I have written the plans assuming the reader has never built a steam engine before and I have tried to anticipate any problems and pitfalls a novice engine builder might have.

The photograph above shows my two engines. All parts are hand made with the exception of the cylinders used for the boilers which were made from empty MIG welding cylinders. The design for these boilers are not included in the plans and I do not advise that you try to build them – see the page on safety. The plans describe how to build the engine only and you will need to buy a boiler from a supplier or build one yourself from a standard design. The engines will also run well on compressed air.

The engines have been run regularly for about three years now and have given no trouble at all.
“Tosca” is a single cylinder engine and "Jessie" has twin cylinders. Each has more than enough power output to operate a small generator or other accessories.
I run them on gas but you may wish to use another fuel.
The plans are tried and tested and produce powerful and reliable engines.
Tosca and Jessie are beautiful sturdy little machines and have greatly impressed all those who have seen them.
